Superior Animals that Start with the Letter ‘S’

Salamander

A salamander is a four-legged amphibian with long tails and has a similar appearance to lizards. However, lizards are not amphibians but are reptiles. Since salamanders live near small bodies of water, they have moist and ultra-sensitive skin, which most lizards do not have. Salamanders have nostrils, but most breathe through their gills, while others get air through their absorbent skin. Another strange fact about these carnivorous salamanders is that they would eat other salamanders, making themselves cannibals.

Scorpion

Scorpions are not insects; they are eight-legged small creatures with long curled tails. Their rear-end parts are actually lethal to both animals and humans; a single scorpion sting has venom that can immobilize its prey and numb a human’s muscles. Scorpions also have two large pincers they use to grab or squeeze their prey to death. They survive in grasslands and deserts by excavating the earth to make burrows as their hiding spots.

Sea Anemone

This plant-like aquatic critter is the “flower of the sea” because it resembles a colorful flower attached to rocks. This invertebrate is also a close relative of corals and jellyfish since it propagates itself through asexual reproduction. Sea anemones may also look harmless (for they look like flowers), but do take note that they love feeding on small fish, mollusks, and crustaceans. They use their stinging tentacles to paralyze their meal and their soft appendages to push the prey into their mouths in the middle of the oral disk (or the flat surface atop the sea anemone).

Seahorse

Seahorse is a small aquatic fish with a long snout, curved neck, and curled tail. It does not have scales, but you can visibly see the bony plates covering its entire body. The seahorse has a unique way of reproducing its kind. After mating, the female seahorse deposits the fertilized eggs into the male seahorse’s brood pouch for incubation. The father seahorse’s stomach becomes bloated as it carries around 2000 eggs for two to three weeks. On the day of giving birth, the male seahorse ejects its live babies called fries.

Seal

Seals are massive pinnipeds with blubbers or fat beneath their thick skin. Since they don’t have limbs, seals use their bellies and flippers to glide from one place to another. Not only that, but seals are also swift divers. They use their hind flippers and tail to thrust underwater. These marine mammals may look adorable, but they are carnivores that feed on fish, crustaceans, and other seals near the cold waters of Arctic and Antarctic regions.

Sheep

This four-legged hooved mammal is a domesticated mammal for livestock. Its body is also covered with super-thick yet soft wool that humans also use as clothing material. Sheep also have excellent senses. They have a wide field of vision due to their rectangular pupils and have a superb sense of smell because of their eyes and feet’ glands.

Shrimp

One of the most sought-after seafood is the shrimp, a small crustacean with a semi-translucent body, five pairs of jointed legs, and a long tail. Shrimps look similar to lobsters and krill. However, they differ in habitats, habits, and limbs. Shrimps are smaller than lobsters but can live in freshwater and saltwater. On the other hand, lobsters inhabit oceans, seas, or brackish water.

Skunk

A skunk is a small mammal with black-and-white fur and a fluffy yet disheveled tail. Skunks are best known for their spraying habit. They have glands on their anus that spritz a sulfur-containing substance that stinks like rotten eggs. The odor is so nasty that you can even smell it half-mile away, and the scent might retain for two to three weeks. But don’t worry, for they’ll only squirt this foul-smelling chemical when they feel threatened by predators or other creatures.

Snail

Snails are gastropods with coiled shells attached to their mucusy bodies. This shell serves as their armor against predators. Meanwhile, they use their muscular foot that creates pedal waves to crawl on the surface. However, a snail’s movement becomes slower due to these muscular tensions. Snails are also some of the few hermaphrodites or creatures having male and female sex organs in the animal kingdom. However, it is uncommon for snails to self-fertilize.

Snake

Snakes are limbless scaly reptiles found in almost all environments, except in the cold regions of the Arctic, Antarctica, and countries where snow remains constant throughout the year. Snakes are cold-blooded creatures; hence, they require external sources to provide body heat.
